The UFC will return to the Prairies this spring, and a rising Ontario contender will stand front and centre. Canadian welterweight Mike Malott is set to headline UFC Fight Night 273 against veteran contender Gilbert Burns on April 18 at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The bout marks a major moment for the 34-year-old Malott, who has steadily built momentum in the UFC’s welterweight division. The Canadian enters the matchup riding consecutive victories on home cards in Vancouver and Montréal, continuing a run that has pushed him toward the division’s top tier.
Burns, a longtime contender ranked among the division’s top names, represents the toughest test of Malott’s career. The Brazilian has spent years facing elite competition at 170 pounds, making the Winnipeg main event a significant measuring stick for the Canadian’s title ambitions.
The April 18 event will be held at the Jets’ home arena and serves as the UFC’s latest Canadian showcase following recent cards in Montréal and Vancouver. Additional fights are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
For Malott, the stakes are clear: a victory over a proven veteran could vault him firmly into contender status — and do so in front of a home crowd.
