6 Canadian Fighters Selected in Inaugural GFL Draft

Posted on 26 January 202527 January 2025 By mmehandy No Comments on 6 Canadian Fighters Selected in Inaugural GFL Draft

The Global Fight League (GFL) has officially announced the results of its inaugural draft, and several Canadian fighters have been selected to compete on their global stage. Representing a variety of weight classes, these athletes are set to showcase their skills and represent Canada in one of the most anticipated MMA promotions in recent years.

London Team Drafts Four Canadian Fighters

The London franchise has made a strong statement by selecting four Canadian fighters across different divisions. Their selections are:

  • Julia Budd (Women’s Bantamweight – 140 lbs): A veteran of the sport, Budd brings a wealth of experience and an impressive resume to the London team. She is expected to be a key figure in the women’s division.
  • Josh Hill (Men’s Bantamweight – 145 lbs): Known for his relentless pace and grappling prowess, Hill will be a formidable competitor in the men’s bantamweight category.
  • Mariusz Ksiazkiewicz (Middleweight – 200 lbs): Ksiazkiewicz adds strength to the middleweight division with his striking power and solid grappling game.
  • Tanner Boser (Light Heavyweight – 225 lbs): A well-rounded fighter with a heavy-handed striking style, Boser is poised to make an impact in the light heavyweight division.

Dubai Adds Two Canadian Stars

Dubai has also recognized Canadian talent, selecting Randi Field in the Women’s Strawweight division (125 lbs). Field is known for her aggressive striking and well-rounded skill set, making her a valuable addition to the Dubai squad. The Windsor, Ontario native went 2-1 in Bellator, and most recently won at WXC last October.

Anastasia Nikolakakos (Atomweight – 110 lbs): is undefeated through 4 amateur and 5 professional bouts, including one over Field.

GFL’s Unique Approach to Weight Classes

The GFL posted on their official X page that they will have an innovative approach to weight classes. The organization has opted to increase weight limits across all divisions, stating:

“The GFL is committed to reducing extreme weight-cutting by increasing weight class limits, ensuring athletes maintain optimal health and peak performance while minimizing injuries. This approach helps fighters stay healthier and better prepared to deliver thrilling performances for fans.“

It is unclear to MM-EH however how increased weight classes would prevent any fighter from cutting weight in order to gain a competitive advantage.

The updated weight classes include:

  • Women’s Atomweight – 110 lbs
  • Women’s Strawweight – 125 lbs
  • Women’s Bantamweight – 140 lbs
  • Men’s Bantamweight – 145 lbs
  • Men’s Featherweight – 155 lbs
  • Men’s Lightweight – 165 lbs
  • Men’s Welterweight – 180 lbs
  • Men’s Middleweight – 200 lbs
  • Men’s Light Heavyweight – 225 lbs
  • Men’s Heavyweight – 265 lbs
